Day 17 – Carrion to Terradillos 27 km

Home / Roncesvalles To Santiago / Day 17 – Carrion to Terradillos 27 km

My day was made when I read a message from Tanika first thing this morning – “mom, you are my hero”!!   What a feeling!!  Thanks Noodelbug for making my day and believing in me.  Love and miss you girls like crazy!

We passed through a flat and somewhat featureless landscape with no shade for most of the day.  A gruelling walk and there were no villages for any rest stops or fueling up for 17 km.  It truly was a rough and tough walk today.  In the village of Caldadilla de la Cueza (17 km later)  nothing was open, siesta truly drives me looney.   The entire Spain shuts down between 14h00 and 17h00.   Two hot and hungry South Africans were not happy chappies! By the time we arrived in Terradillos I could have eaten a starved elephant.  Debbie, Jess, Shereez and I went straight to the first open bar and ordered the pilgrims meal.  (3 course meal)!  Once our tummies were full we showered and washed our clothes, every other day it has been the other way round.  There is also no supermarket in this dam village so we can not prepare for the long haul again tomorrow·  (Hmmm I think I still have some cookies in my back pack).

The landscape is still very, very flat and I expect nothing different for the next few days.

I met Joona, a 17 year old Korean guy who grew up in Chicago.  His dad caught him smoking dagga so packed his bag and sent him to walk the Camino for 5 weeks.  (I just love this story)!!  Also met two 2 young girls from Napa Valley, California – best friends who decided to walk the Camino before they go to different universities.  Erica and Adrian (both 18) and our convo started when they asked me if they could please have one of my beaded bangles.  I lovingly parted with two bangles.  True best friends and one got the feeling that both of them knew what was important when it came to “friendship”. Loved my chat with them and hope to see them again and again on the Camino.

On I walk……..
